Does Best Buy Wipe Hard Drives Before Recycling
Yes, Best Buy does wipe data from hard drives, laptops, and other devices that may contain sensitive information before recycling them. Best Buy has a strict policy when it comes to handling customer data and destroys all customer data before they send off any device for recycling.
But if possible, wipe your data before you drop off your device for recycling.
With cases of theft and fraud on the rise, its more important than ever to ensure that your data is safe and secure. And one of the best ways to do that is to wipe your data before recycling your device. Best Buy goes to the extent of doing that for you.
You see, before this retailer sends any possible data-containing item to the contracted partners, it makes sure to have the data destroyed. This policy applies to laptops, desktops, tablets, and other gadgets that may carry your information.
Of course, the onus is still on you to wipe your data before taking your device to Best Buy. In fact, the retailer highly recommends that you do so. They even provide the procedure to wipe data from a hard drive. But in case you forget or cant do it for some reason, you can rest assured knowing that your data will be safe.

The EPA recommends that you take old compact fluorescent lamps to qualified recyclers, rather than disposing of them in trash cans or curbside recycling garbage cans. You can bring old CFLs to The Home Depot for free recycling. Visit the Green Choices website for more information. If you are concerned about the mercury content in CFLs, consider LED bulbs.
Another option is to contact your local waste management agency, and some stores, including IKEA, will use CFLs. Bag it. If there is no place to recycle your CFL light bulb, seal it in a plastic bag and throw it in the trash. Do not place a CFL bulb, or anything containing mercury, in an incinerator.
The online recycling tool events will offer consumers a free and convenient opportunity to drop off and recycle their used compact fluorescent light bulbs and fluorescent tubes. The bulbs will be collected at kiosks outside the stores from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Button Cell Batteries
These batteries are also known as coin batteries. They are used in watches, toys, remote car starters and other items. Button cell contain silver and mercury. They must be recycled. You can take them to Call2Recycle drop-off sites, like those at The Home Depot. Watch repair shops may also take these batteries for recycling.

Because car batteries contain lead and acid, you cant put them in the trash or take them to the dump. They also are not accepted at most battery recycling collection sites. Still, you shouldnt leave old car batteries sitting around your garage or storage shed. They can leak damaging fluid.
When you buy a new car battery, the store will often take your old battery. Even if you arent buying a battery, many auto retailers accept old car batteries. They will dispose of them properly. Your city or county may also offer car battery collection sites.
Lithium-ion batteries are accepted at Call2Recycle sites at The Home Depot. You can also drop off old laptop batteries to be recycled at some office supply stores. Dont put them in the trash or take them to the landfill.
Cornell University Scientist Develops Polymer Additive
Multiblock polymer enables recycling mixtures of polyethylene and polypropylene.
Pictured above: Geoffrey Coates, center, in his lab with James Eagan, a postdoctoral researcher in Coates group, and researcher Anne LaPointe. Credit: Cornell University
During his presentations on plastics and recycling, Geoffrey Coates, a professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, often begins with the question: What percentage of the 78 million tons of plastic used for packaging actually gets recycled and reused in a similar way?
The answer is just 2 percent, Coates says, adding that nearly one-third of these plastics are leaked into the environment, around 14 percent are used in incineration and/or energy recovery and 40 percent wind up in landfills.
One of the problems is that polyethylene and polypropylene , which account for two-thirds of the worlds plastics, have different chemical structures and cannot be repurposed together.
A discovery from Coates lab might have the potential to change that, according to Cornell University. Coates and his group have collaborated with a group from the University of Minnesota to develop a multiblock polymer that, when added to a mixture of the two otherwise incompatible materials, creates a new and mechanically tough polymer.
Whats exciting about this, he continues, is we can go to as low as 1 percent of our additive, and you get a plastic alloy that really has super-great properties.

Are Alkaline Batteries Recyclable
The problem is that old cell phones are not normal waste. The lithium-ion batteries in cell phones have made them responsible for 65% of the fires in Californias waste facilities. And sometimes, once one old cell phone explodes, it causes others to do the same.
If there are multiple batteries in there, not only will there be a fire, there will be explosions, said Carl Smith, CEO and president of a battery manufacturer-funded recycling program, Call2Recycle. If its in a recycling facility where its mixed with paper and other items that are burnable, that goes off like you wouldnt believe.
Even when batteries are removed from devices, there is still enough charge in them to create a spark if the battery terminal touches something metal, such as the sides of a garbage truck.
But its not just happening in California. There was a five-alarm fire at a recycling facility in New York City, and it was caused by a lithium-ion battery. Four branches of the Long Island Rail Road had to be closed for hours due to thick smoke covering the tracks.

Recycling Batteries Conserves Resources
When lithium-ion, lead-acid, and cadmium are properly used and discarded, they do not pose a safety hazard to the environment.
Unfortunately, these resources are not renewable, and this means miners have to work in unsafe conditions to find raw materials. Recycling these batteries helps to conserve resources and keep miners out of unsafe conditions.

Even when the cells no longer run devices, the batteries can still produce current. They can be hazardous if discarded improperly. Take these precautions before throwing them out:
- Collect used household batteries in a container. A cardboard box or plastic tub is a safe option.
- Prevent any fire risk by taping 9-volt battery terminals before tossing.
